The 10 Commandments of TNR
- Spay and neuter all cats in the colony!
- Use safe, humane traps and follow best practices to reduce stress and prevent injury. Never leave traps unattended and check them frequently.
- Ear-tip all cats for identification.
- Give cats a safe, warm place to rest after surgery. Monitor them for any post-operative complications before returning them to their colony.
- Return the cats to their familiar outdoor environment once they’ve recovered. This helps maintain the established colony structure and deters newcomers.
- Ensure a consistent food and water source, and check the colony regularly for any signs of illness, new arrivals, or changes in behavior.
- Keep feeding stations clean and remove uneaten food. Good sanitation reduces disease spread and keeps the neighborhood supportive of your efforts.
- Communicate the benefits of TNR to neighbors, local officials, and volunteers. Encourage community involvement and support for ongoing care.
- Stay vigilant, track the colony’s health, and continue to trap and sterilize any new cats. TNR is an ongoing commitment to improving cat welfare and reducing overpopulation.
- Monitor the colony for dangers such as hostile neighbors, predators, or hazardous locations and take action when necessary.
